Myofascial Release is a holistic, therapeutic approach to manual therapy for the treatment of striated muscle pain and immobility.  Myofascial Release offers a comprehensive approach for the evaluation and treatment of the myofascial system, the system of tissues and muscles within the body . It involves applying gentle pressure into connective tissue and fascia. Fascia is a structure of connective tissues that surround muscles, blood vessels, and nerves. In healthy conditions, fascia tissue is relaxed and wavy in configuration. The fascial system can provide cushioning support in order that movement is increased and without pain. A myofascial release technique helps to detect restrictions and may facilitate the discharge of the fascia. Injury, surgery, poor posture, or inflammation of tissues can create myofascial restrictions that produce pressure and pain upon sensitive structures

Myofascial release is a type of manual (hands-on) healthcare treatment, known as manual therapy.  While muscles often respond to the firmer strokes and thrusts of massage, fascia may respond to a milder touch.  Another type of manual therapy, chiropractic manipulation, focuses on improving motion and function of particular joints, while myofascial release works on a broader area of muscular and fascial tissue.  The movements of myofascial release treatments have been compared to kneading a piece of taffy- gentle stretching that gradually softens, lengthens, and pulls restrictions from the fascia.
